The Mach 1 tanks are expensive and rarely come up for sale. Expensive, in 2013 terms, is about $1000 and it depends on condition and paint.

For instance, item number 370787161531 on eBay is a Mach 1 tank in Italy where the seller is asking $1650 USD! And the seller fails to provide a photo of the depression on the underside that affirms it is indeed a Mach 1 tank.

Here's one in black paint (not standard so I would be concerned about repairs hiding underneath) that sold for $790: 321068193999

Here's on in original paint that sold for $940. The original paint is poor, but at least you know it probably does not have a pound of bondo filling a dent.: 290852532667

The Mach 1 tanks are about 19" long not counting the tangs that attach the front of the tank to the frame's headstock.

There is also an identical tank to the Mach 1 tank that does not have a depression on the bottom of the tank for carb clearance. They sell for a little less.

I think you should would be best served to find a tank shape you like, Ducati or otherwise, and let your boyfriend fabricate/weld the mounts for it. Figure you are going to be in for some light repairs to the tank unless you are lucky and find a dent-free tank. You'll need a repaint to match your fenders and such anyway, so there is no sense in paying a high price for a tank with a pretty paint job unless you are going to try to match the fenders and seat to the tank's paint and that can be tricky.

Kind of get a feel for how long the tank needs to be so that it doesn't leave a huge gap betwen the end of the tank and the beginning of the saddle, or that the tank is not so long that you can't put your saddle on the bike.

Or just wait it out and the tank you want will come up for sale sometime.

Jim

Kittay, these are just a few pictures i have saved of bikes i like. I recomend you do some searching for what you like and start from there.
all of these are mostly fiberglass bodywork except the tank that looks steel and isn't painted, that is a good tank choice its from a benelli
and you should be able to find one for $100 or so.
leave all the expensive rare Ducati tanks to the guys doing restorations and save your money, you are gonna need it

I'm still thinking the tank like in the first post. I'm thinking of drawing it out what I want and see if that would look good with a front fairing. :)

Jim bought the coffin tank and other parts from me last year. It is a very good tank that would be perfect on a bike. I have his contact information if you need it.
