I take your point. Checking every other option before drastic engine splitting makes sense.
You might get an idea of the state of the gearbox by removing the selector box, gripping the shaft coupling with vise grips, and turning it through the gears while turning also the chain sprocket.

Perhaps some cause for hope...
After a fresh rebuild on my 250 widecase, a downshift between 4th and 3rd was also a "bit stiff" and occasionally resistant to change. It wasn't a(n external) selector box issue. All other changes were perfect on the downshift and upshift too. I had replaced 3rd gear mainshaft due to wear with a new gear.
After about 500km it settled in and it is now quite a slick change.

I haven't put many miles on it yet since the rebuild.
I will ride it for now and pay close attention to
How it shifts. Hopefully the issue goes away.
Next time I get some time I'm going to take the
Shifter off and run through the gears by hand
And see what it's like.
