Intake Porting questions for a 450 R/T head

Postby wcorey » Wed Feb 10, 2010 7:15 am

I have a lot to say on this one but will start out by simply asking if anyone has any experience with these?
Not planning on cams or bigger valves, not looking for a race engine. Still want to retain some low/midrange tractability.
Should I open it up? A bit? A lot?
Are they generally pretty good already and I should leave it be?
Do they vary a lot from one to another?
Any 'little things to watch out for'? Thin potential break through areas?
Places where material must be added?
Seemingly odd protuberances that should actually be there?
I have carb options from 29 to 40mm with a bunch between...

If you don't have it already, I would recommend Tom Bailey's book, Ducati Singles First Person, as a good place to start. Tom gives some basic info on porting heads. It is not the complete answer, but should get you started.

Tom also has a new book coming out in the fall (I think that is what he said). There is a thread on it somewhere.
