250 NC Mach 1 Piston...

Postby blaat! » Fri Sep 16, 2011 1:11 pm

Hi All,
I'm about to have my 250 Mach 1 cylinder bored and purchase a new piston and rings.I want to make the engine stock and therefore plan to put a (10:1) standard piston rather than a racing piston. I have found three places that sell Pistons and was wondering if anyone has advice or recommendations for which one to go with:

Lacey:

Guzzino:

West Coast British Racing:

http://www.westcoastbritishracing.com/DP1.html

I know Lacey comes highly recommended by most. Guzzino seems to carry high quality products as well. WCBR has limited info online, but I could probably call them up and have them walk me through selecting the proper piston/rings/pin/bushing. WCBR seems a bit less expensive, but this is one area I want the best option, not the cheapest.

Anyone had experience with any of these pistons? Are they all similar (forged piston, moly rings, etc)? Anyone know of another good source?

Thanks!
-Jim

Hi Jim
in europe 'I now two well known adress in addition to Lacey.
http://www.ducatiscrambler.com/index.htm order for members(20€) english spare part list - coated pistons available
http://www.gransport.de/ a perfect one man show in his garage for single and two cylinder offer JE pistons in different options- road and race - no english orderside

I'm little bit surprised about the 10:1 compaction
for race 'I use 10,5 :1 but never for a road engine.

best regards

I can recommend Lacey as a total pro who is always ready to go the extra mile and a nice guy to communicate with. The standard Mach 1 piston nominally 10to1 was nowhere near that,so if you are looking for more go then a genuine 10 may work well.

I've not bought piston, but have bought gaskets and ignition parts from Lacey. I do know that of the 4 venders I have bought parts from, Lacey has real engine and race bike building experience. EuroJam, Classic and Guzzino are all helpful and easy to deal with and I don't want to take anything away from them as I've appreciated the service and parts I've gotten from them. But Lacey somehow mangages to exchange numerous lengthy posts explaining the procedures to perform some engine repairs or use the parts I've bought from him. Additionally posing a question on this forum will often result in Nigel Lacey responding and providing expert advice. Often I've posed a question here on the board and received lengthy PM's from Nigel to hold my hand when a public post might have bared my ignorance for all to see. Nigel and Edina are passionate Ducati fans who happen to also be very generous in sharing the valuable expert information they possess. They also manage to be able to sell some parts shipped from the UK for less than I can get them from stateside venders.

Blaat...

x2 on what motomike said, I have bought from all of the above (among others) and one thing is for sure, if you call and order a piston from nigel, he isnt going to recommend you buy the most expensive one (unless you need too) he is going to recommend what you need, based on what you plan on doing with your motorcycle. I wont mention names but there are other people out there that would sell you parts based more on how much profit they make on them, rather than actually worrying about selling you the right parts for your application.
