Hi there

Postby jayguy » Fri Sep 09, 2011 5:38 pm

Just found this forum and all the great info you guys are sharing.

I've got a '66 n/c SCR 250 that I've been hiding in the garage for 11 years, time to start working on it I think.

I haven't decided yet if I want to restore it or resto-mod it. I like the look of the original SCR, but I've also been thinking about doing it as a cafe racer - sort of - kinda - street bike.

I got the bike free when a co-worker was helping his brothers-in-law clear out an old shed on their farm in central Iowa. He knew I had a Ducati Monster, and saw Ducati on the engine and thought I might be interested. I did a title search before moving away from Iowa, and it appears the bike was never registered there, so I don't have a title. I imagine I'll have to get a bonded title when/if I register it, but I'll deal with that later.

It's fairly complete, missing a few things though, and I've slowly picked up a few things over the years.

I'll post pictures up in a folder on photobucket later and post the link for you all to see my little dusty gem. :)

It's still buried in the back of the garage, but I'll start digging it out and setting up a place to work on it soon.

s/n on the engine is 93964, there is nothing on the neck. From what I can tell, if there ever was a sticker on there with the imported s/n, it's long gone.

It's also got the 19" front, 18" rear wheels, but no brake hubs at all. The wheels kind of flop around on the axles, is that because the hubs aren't there?

This is my first old bike to work on, up until now it's either been minor jobs on the Monster or bolt-on bits on my cars. I'm looking forward to this, and eventually riding the bike around. :)

You got a free 66' Scr you lucky b***ard... just kidding

Honestly though, I am in the process of doing a concourse restoration on one myself, so both the brake plates are totally missing ? I have a lot of spare parts, i post some on ebay here and there, but i usually dont have a lot of spare time to do that, there are several people on here with spares, if you put a list together of what you need im sure you will find people on here that have most, if not all of it...the rarest pieces on that bike are: the fenders, especially the front, the rear tailight, and bracket, the key switch (aprilia) the headlight switch (aprilia 59n) the fuel tank, the seat, the battery tray and hold-down, most other pieces are easier to come by, I probably have spare brake plates, and if not, they regularly pop up on ebay, fairly cheap. I would really appreciate any pics (up close as possible) you could supply of you scr. especially the battery tray, and if yours is intact (which is rare) if you could take measurements of it, I and others on here would benefit greatly from this info, as these 66 scr's actually had a totally unique battery tray that is completely different than all other years. (ive been told it is the same as the bronco 125cc also)

Here's a link to the pics I took this morning. http://s142.photobucket.com/albums/r90/jayguy4/Scrambler%20250/

The bike is crammed in a back corner of the garage, it'll take a little re-organizing to get it out and give myself some room to work on it, that's the next project I've got at home. Between cheering for the Hawkeyes on Saturdays and the Seahawks on Sundays, and helping a buddy build his Factory Five Roadster. :) All kinds of fun this fall!

Joe,
My bike does have an intact and nearly perfect looking battery tray. I'll try to get better pics of it, as well as measurements to share with everyone.
Yes, both brake plates are missing from both front and rear wheels. I've bought one (front I think) a while back, it's in a box somewhere, along with a few other parts. When I get it out fully I'll go through my parts again and figure out what I have and what I need.

I also bought a carb and exhaust a while back, package deal off of ebay, but I'm not sure if it is the right carb. The exhaust looks like the SCR track exhaust, no muffler, just a straight pipe. I tried to fit it on once when I first got it, but wasn't sure if I had it right. Again, I'll go through that all when I get the bike out in the open again. :)

Thanks for the quick responses guys, looking forward to hanging out here more and learning a lot!

I really wish I had started on this bike a few years ago, when I was up in Seattle. There was a great Vintage bike scene there, and I talked to a couple guys who had beautiful singles up there, but never did anything with my bike at the time. Now I'm in Vegas, and I haven't heard of much of a Vintage scene here at all. Guess I'll have to find out.

Jay,

Actually you can add the correct carb. (ss1-27d) to the list of rare/expensive parts on that bike, but it is used on other models, so it isnt quite as hard to find as other pieces can be. but very expensive all the same.

The correct pipe looks like this one im posting, along with a pic of the correct carb, the brake plates are fairly common once you go through everything, let us know what you are missing...

These scr's never had a muffler, but if you arent set on originality, you will probably want to add one, because they are loud

Yeah, that's exactly what my exhaust looks like. I don't really remember the carb though, it could look like that, but I'm not sure, it's been a while.

I thought there were 2 exhaust kits available with the SCR new, one with a muffler built in, and this one as an option. That's what I remember from the info I read a few years ago however, when I last really looked into the bike.

I've got a couple manuals and parts books, as well as a couple of the Singles books that have been published. I'll have to dig them out sometime and start going through them again also, but I don't remember too much on the SCR's in them, seemed there was always more on the more popular models like the Mach 1 and Mark 3.

Anyway, thanks for the info, I'll post more pics of the parts I do have as I dig them out of the pile.

Hi Jay

Welcome. You are lucky to pick up a nice little Duc for free. It looks like you'll be investing plenty before you get where you want to go though. Mine was probably a scrambler but a previous owner made it into a cafe-ish street bike. I like it better that way. Good luck
Mike
