Modern Ideal Lightbulb for Dukes with 12v.systems

Postby DewCatTea-Bob » Sat Jun 25, 2011 10:54 am

____ While asking a friend about H4-bulbs, (who confirmed for me that the standard-H4 is indeed 55/60-watts), I learned of a relatively new headlight-bulb that's got to be the best choice for those of us who have 12v.systems.
I knew he had replaced his std.H4/quartz-bulb with a higher-power (80/100w) version, so I asked how that had been working-out for him,, he said that after the high-beam burned-out on him, he learned of a new type of bulb made especially for motorcycles by Sylvania, which is designated 'ST' H4/Silverlight.
What's of special interest about it for us, is that it has a 45/65-watt rating, which makes it much more suitable for our non-high-power charging-systems. _ That way ya can use the 45w-light for in-town at lower RPMs, and when running at higher RPMs out of town, ya can use the 65w.high-beam !
And he tells me that the high-beam is very bright indeed ! _ He says that even though it's 15-watts less, it makes way more light than the 80w-light which he had previously.
When asked how it compared to his previous 100w.high-beam, he wasn't too sure but thought they might be pretty-close to the same. _ Reason is it seems, he was told that the special-bulb is able to produce 25% more light (for the amount of power consumed).
__ I don't know how the ST-H4 compares to the other type of modern light-bulb which fellow-member 'ecurbruce' has been planning to run, so maybe Bruce can tell us what all he's learned about such.
But I'm thinking that if Bruce doesn't do anything more to his currently planned alternator, then this Sylvania-bulb ought be more apt to allow for better than break-even riding within city-limits.
__ Also, hopefully this info will be useful for BevelBob as well ! _ So Bob, please let us know if you can obtain this useful HL.bulb, across-the-pond where you're at.

Enlightened-Cheers,
-Bob
