160 Schematic Feedback

Postby gregwils » Sat Dec 06, 2025 7:37 pm

I'm a electrical infant, but I need to rewire a 160 Junior that I am restoring. I want to switch to 12v, but still the existing 28W 2 coil generator. I was planning to use LED light bulbs to reduce the load to a level the generator could manage. I was planning to use a cheap 12V R/R, or a diode if I think the power generation and consumption is reasonably balanced. I took a stab at creating a schematic. My knowledge is mostly conceptual at this point, this is the first time I have attempted something like this. I would welcome any feedback or you can tell me I am way off. Thanks.

Unless your alternator can be modified to provide 12V charging at a reasonable speed, it might not work unless the revs are kept higher than standard spec.

I don’t know the output of the generator on my 175, but it has 2 wires coming out, and 2 identical stator coils which appear to be wired with a common ground point in the centre. I followed the advice elsewhere on this site and isolated the central connection from ground, then fitted an Electrex reg-rec set for 12V. It all works fine.
I have an LED headlight bulb but don’t often ride in the dark.

Thanks Jordan - I did some further research based on your response and it appears that most 12v coils need closer to 50 watts, so you are most likely correct that it won't work.

Thanks Ian - I know that Ducati made 40 watt and 28 watt generators. I would imagine the 40w would work fine, just a little concerned about the lower output generator.

It’s just come back to me that I did a pre-check by connecting some halogen headlight bulbs directly to the AC wires as soon as the engine was able to run to make sure I had reasonable output before spending the money on the reg-rec. I may have the notes somewhere.
I used a slave battery to power the coil.

Ducati160WiringDiagram.jpg

Here is a copy of the 160 wiring diagram. The Monza Jr. came with a 3 wire stator. One wire runs the AC ignition, one wire runs AC headlight and taillight and one wire is rectified and runs the DC horn and brake light. The scrambler is wired similarly. On my 160, I switched the tail light to DC and had a LED brake/tail light.

The 6v points system works well. The AC ignition is great since you don't need a battery to run it. I can see getting a second rectifier and turn the AC headlight into DC and using a DC headlight. I wouldn't bother with a battery and instead use a capacitor. There is a parts catalog on this site. I have a 160 service manual would like to post to this site.

Since you have a two wire stator (someone mentioned Spanish 160s had that), do you know if you have a AC coil and point cam or a DC coil and point cam? If you have AC I would leave the AC ignition and attach the second wire (depending on voltage) to either just a rectifier or rec/reg. I would change to a led headlight and taillight. There should be enough current to run all your lights and horn off the second wire.

Good luck - Mark
