Of course I meant not insured. With my insurance I can insure bike for damage or theft while off the road, including parts stripped, and in the shed . It is a nominal amount and would give piece of mind.

Morning George, I would go ahead and SORN the machine, just to ensure that DVLA don't have a trick up their sleeve? However, if you are so inclined a quiet read of this link should prove illuminating.

DVLA_When_you_need_to_make_a_SORN?

If the weather holds, the 450 could get manky today, afore the next cold snap! ;)

Good health, Bill

A very good morning to you, George.

I got caught by the DVLA enforcing a penalty after I had SORNed my 1974 350 Mk3, and then subsequently changed the taxation class to 'historic'. I did so because I thought I should tidy up the admin as I began to restore the old thing, which has been off the road since the mid-90s, having been my sole means of transport since 1977. The SORN system didn't start until 1998, so it was completely under the DVLA's radar.
But they got in touch very quickly with a demand for £100 because the bike wasn't listed on the database as being insured for road use.
When I protested that it couldn't possibly be used since it was (and still is, to some extent) in several separate pieces, they explained that altering anything on the V5 automatically overrides the SORN and makes the machine taxed (or liable to be taxed), and the law says it must be insured.
Nothing on the website(s) or in the printed leaflets we all have to read about this sort of thing actually mentions this important regulation, and even the DVLA had to acknowledge that. They did agree to halving the fine, so for £50 I learned that a SORN is very fragile, and will be invalidated by any change in the paperwork. Once that happens, the bike has to be properly insured for the road. Or you must re-SORN it immediately.
To be fair, I can imagine how this came about, but I still resent being bitten on the bum by it!

Very best wishes from the Celtic Fringe,
Peter.

I think I must have been missleading DBD Brian in previous post. Yes it should be on SORN. The additional small fee insuance I mentioned is to safeguard against theft or accidents in the shed, Fire, rain damage or just the wife throwing it away to stop you spending so much time on bike :D

Thanks all for your help, I have just put it on SORN, and printed off the conformation E-mail.
That's useful information Peter, re change of particulars on the V5c when the vehicle is on SORN.

Will give you a ring George.
