Re: Speedo models & Abnormal Cam/Rocker-Wear

Postby DewCatTea-Bob » Wed Jan 19, 2011 6:00 pm

" The tyre is correct, so there is some issue with callibration on the existing speedo.
the replacement tested as close to spot on as i can reasonably expect. +/- 2 %. "

____ Could be that your (incorrect) speedo was original to a 19" front-wheel. _ (As I recall, I think the 19" tires have a O.D. of about 83-inches, so your 18" tire would turn about 7% faster than it ought to spin that speedo.
__ I neglected to include (before) that your first-pictured speedo was also probably used on 1966 250SCR-models, so now you have a much better idea of what that one belonged to !

" The speedo I have reads 13652 on the odo.
(Bob, you might have to rethink life time of these things!!! "

____ Well I hadn't meant to claim that they never make it past 6k, only that they AVERAGE under 7k, (for being known to break-down by).

" How am I doing if we add up the odo's of working units and average them? "

____ For the model you have, it's done well past the norm !
I've seen at least 100 units of that type, and it's very rare to see any with over 9k registered (before break-down) !

" I discovered badly worn opener rockers and cam. Probably due to a previous owner having no idea about valve shimming. "

____ I doubt that incorrect valve-shimming (for under 3k-miles) would result in such excess wear !
__ It's difficult to be very sure without hand-inspecting myself but, those surfaces look as if they've been ran for over 500-miles with fairly-badly fuel-diluted sump-oil, or pretty-much without any pumped-oil for roughly 150 to 250 miles of normal running.
So if you're not sure of the actual cause for that abnormal wear, you should also check that your oil-pump is really working as it should !
__ Here follows a link to a related post on the subject ...

Good-luck !

PLEASE NOTE... If this-post is not-yet signed-off with '-Bob', then I'm still in the process of completing it,, and if not also included with 'DCT' near bottom as well, then I may edit this post's wording at a later time. - Dct.Bob
