Anyone used Mikuni 38mm TM on a 450 ?

Postby graeme » Wed Apr 19, 2023 2:51 am

Asking as I'm thinking of trying a 38mm TM flat slide on a 450.
I've had success using PHF32 and 36 on 450s, but thinking of trying a more modern TM this time.

Hi Graeme,

There is a guy in Oz who has fitted Mikuni flat slides to his 900 and is very pleased (I believe that Mikuni Oz makes a kit for the bike) but 38 mm is very big, I don't know if you will get the port big enough to take advantage of it. Nigel or Eldert will be able to advise you as they have both raced 450's.

Cheers,

Colin

Hello Colin,

I also know chaps that are using the Mikuni Oz TM kit for bevel twins.
Very good reports from all.
The twin kit uses TM 41, so I thought 38mm might suit a 450 ?

Hi Graeme,

I am no expert, but a carb that size will only work at high revs, so for racing it would be OK, but the gas speed at low revs will be very slow. If you do all your riding on fast roads (lucky devil if you do) it will be fine, but I think that all the tuning stuff (carb size, camshaft lift and duration and compression ratio) is a compromise that has to be tailored to your riding conditions.

I know that Mikuni say that a larger size than normal can be used when fitting one of their carbs.

Cheers,

Colin
