Speedo service.
Thinking of giving my speedo a simple clean/lube. Anyone done this?.

Yes, a long time ago.
Don't expect anything flash - only the tachometers were good stuff, well the big white faced ones anyway.
After seeing how crude my speedo was, I bought a new one instead - cheap enough at the time.
That's what I like about early Ducatis. The important components were good, the legal necessities only just good enough.

I just lost a major post on this that I worked on for half an hour or more and it timed out and vaporized when I sent it.
what a bummer!
Short answer. You can not lube the internal plastic gears without complete disassembly. You can wick in some oil in the main drive bearing between the drive bearing and the case. This is a long steel shaft that has the square drive for the speedo cable. The shaft is hard polished steel and is a sleeve bearing about 1.5 inches long that rotates directly inside the casting of the unit.

That does not look too difficult!, Is there any way of adjusting (calibrating) it?, mine is about 10 mph too fast all the time. If successful I will move onto the RC ,although they are chronometric I think. And a lot more complicated.

I took the speedo apart to rid it of some internal cobwebs, I cant say if it is possible to calibrate it, but at a guess and from what I remember I would say no.

Re: Speedo service.
A gauge repairer friend calibrates them by changing the strength of the magnet, with some special equipment.
I think he remagnetises it, then progressively de-magnetises it a bit at a time, each time checking on his bench rig against a known accurate gauge.
Just a tip, while on the subject of gauges:
My friend suggests never to store them upside-down, as most have some damping fluid in them that can leak out unless always the right way up.
From the way the early Veglia speedos' needles waved around, I don't think they had any damping.

The drive Mechanism is not even shown in your photo. Where are all the rest of the parts we cant see behind the face? It is misleading to state the speedo is disassembled while the entire mechanism is hidden from view. It is the other side of the face that is important. Do you have any photos of the other side of the face?

OOOPs, sorry. You never said it was "disassembled". My bad. I intend to post photos of the drive mechanism at some point

Hi,
Just de cobwebbed another Veglia speedo, not the best of pics, but here's what's inside.
Unfortunately, the needle crumbled into a few pieces, so I'm on the hunt for a replacement.
