Intro to 450 springer head & shop manual

Postby Low Country bevel Duc » Wed Feb 15, 2023 1:36 am

Picked up 450 springer head this morning. I am Trying to figure out what year and model she is. Motor is locked, won’t turn over. Anyone have a downloadable shop manual pdf file?

Serial number on engine is 450027. It was raced flat track by original owner at a dirt track outside of Metter, GA USA late 1960’s -70’s Could be a bunch of different bikes put together?

I Would like to open engine to see if salvageable. I have rebuilt 2 & 4 stoke Japanese engines 70’s to late 2000’s. Do all my own wrenching on all my dirt & street bikes, I have factory shop manual for every one in my stables.

Any & all help is greatly appreciated, thnx

Wow, what a mess. Everything is salvageable, but it depends on the cost; you will have to see how much water has found its way into the engine and what damage it has done. Could be an interesting project, keep us informed.

Cheers,

Colin

Wow! Great project! The engine number shows it as a 1969 450, but I don’t know what spec or model it was. I don’t have any wide case manuals, apart from the Haynes guide.

Great to see more photos!

If it's helpful 450043 & 450083 are both scramblers according to https://www.bevelheaven.com/data-single.htm but you never really know with Ducati. The boys in the factory seemed to pick engine casings somewhat at random. As has been said already, everything is salvageable but you will need to make or acquire some special tools to pull the beast apart and judging by the broken studs (and more to come I'd guess) a good deal of heat and patience. Back to Classics (https://www.ducaticlassics.com/parts/25 ... ambler/all) is good for exploded diagrams of the engine and Ducati Singles Restoration by Mick Walker is a useful guide as is the Haynes manual however you'll find the assembled crew on here your best guide.

Good luck with it.
