swing arm removal

Postby bodge » Tue Aug 16, 2022 2:16 pm

i have a 175 frame im trying to strip which doesnt have the 2 clamp bolts my 250 has.

there appears to be a roll pin driven into a hole that has been drilled completly through the swinging arm and shaft, there was also what appeared to be a large self tapper screwed into the pin from above.

is this standard ? ive given it a little bit of a massage with a hammer and no joy am i missing something or do i just have to beat the snot out of it?

Aye bodge,

Slather it with 'BulldogBDX', for at least 48 hours and then try a little warming, before " beating the snot out of it!"

Diesel fuel or citric acid are good alternatives, as well.

I would be wary about the " beating the snot out of it!" in case you start to rivet over the edges of whatever you are beating! ;)

Try a brass drift, brass plumbing fitting, or copper tube for receiving the blows from a dead blow mallet, rather than directly beating the object, with a wee ½lb hammer. A single blow from a well aimed 2lb ball pein or even 4lb mash hammer, I find works better. ;)

Good health, Bill

I had an early A series 200 Elite frame that needed a lot of heat from an oxy-acetylene torch, together with a steel drift and a 14 lb sledgehammer to get it to move.
The usual aluminium drift and 4lb club hammer had no effect whatever.
Happy bashing.

If you can get access you might be able to drill it out with a carbide drill bit (but be careful, carbide bits break more easily than the normal ones).

a 175 has the bronze bushing in the frame not in the swingarm .

the selftapper look like a grease fitting to me

i would knock out the roll pin or pins and then put the frame under a press and see if it will move out

I have been there a few times..... I'm with Eldert on this, use a press if you have one or take it to somebody who has.......I don't have any big hammers anymore (they were too tempting) 8-)
Cheers,
George

On my 175, I pulled the swing arm pin out with a puller made from a piece of threaded bar and various spacers etc. Much more controllable than a big hammer.
