Electrex reg-rec

Postby ranton_rambler » Sat May 21, 2022 12:15 pm

Anyone have any comments on reliability of Electrex kit? My 175 has an RR163 running with original generator, converted to 12V.
The first reg-rec failed very quickly and Electrex replaced it FOC and this one has done a couple of years with no problem until recently. The charge light stays on, although I am measuring 14V at the battery when the engine is running so it seems to be charging OK.
The wiring is very simple and checks out OK so I think the part of the reg-rec that controls the lamp has gone wrong.

Aye Ian,

In my case '74 450 MKIII, with an Electrex alternator, R&R (Model: SEL-09000-163) and Hall effect ignition (Model: EL-09054-169), after 6,000 miles, no problems.

The H4 headlight bulb has blown once, I suspect vibration; and the 10Amp lighting fuse has blown once, with no obvious cause? So will be looking to use a LED headlamp unit in the near future, probably from "Goffy". Rather than chancing my arm directly with a Chinese unknown!

I hope that you can resolve the problem.

Good health, Bill

I cannot answer your question, although I have had the Electrex World ignition kit on my 250 for about a year, and one of their R/R on my GT1000 for about three years with no problems so far, but I do recall a few years ago Nigel Lacey posted something on his site about not stocking Electrex World stuff anymore because of reliability issues, which hopefully were resolved.

I already have an LED headlamp. Can't remember the brand but was not an eBay special. Very bright but the beam pattern not fantastic.

According to the Electrex website, Nigel is now the sole distributor of kits for Ducati singles, and he shows them on his website. So I guess he must have regained confidence in them.

I might just disconnect the charge light and check the battery periodically!

As the battery seems to be charging OK and the R-R is out of warranty I think I'll fit a Gammatronix battery monitor.
Only £15 compared to £75 for a new R-R.
Any experience with this, or similar?

I bought 4 similar items, same voltage monitoring indications, although these look better finished and more mechanically robust.

2 of them released all the smoke that they contained, one I have not used yet, and the other is working very well on my Velocette. It could be because the wires weren't very well supported where they exited the device, but the one you are looking at seeems a lot better.

The Velocette system produces (theoretically) only 60W, and this monitor provides good reassurance that the charging system is good.

Worth a punt in my opinion.
Cheers

Thanks. I'll get one ordered.

After the breakdown of the Pb-acid battery (initial equipment), I now use a Gammatronix monitor in LiFePO4 version on my 2011 Guzzi V7classic. It proved to be an excellent product over the last 5 years.
Gammatronixs offers also an "amplifier" for 6 or 12V points ignition/+ or - on chassis, which prolongs the life of the points, improves kickstarting and overall engine performance. It is recommended for our battery/points ignited singles.

For the voltage monitors there is an alternative: http://www.sparkbright.co.uk/battery-voltage-monitors.php

I believe the Exectrex quality issues were a number of years ago. I remember Nigel or someone else posting they were resolved before I purchased mine three years ago. I have had no issues. Started with the original 6v, then switched to 12v.
