I think that if you live in a hot country, then SAE 50 is superior (still) to a multigrade, especially if it is a synthetic, but in a colder climate the cold-flow characteristics favour a multigrade.
Just to add something controversial, I would add that whatever oil anyone chooses, make sure that it has high levels of ZDTP (ZDDP) in order to properly protect the camshaft and followers from wear; most modern oils have low levels to prevent damage to catalytic converters. Westway oils for instance make a fully synthetic 20/50, which should be ideal for old bikes, but it has only 800 ppm of ZDTP added, which is only half of what is necessary to prevent follower wear on old engines. They do however sell a classic, semi-synthetic 20/50 with high levels of ZDTP which should be perfect for old Ducatis....... If anyone has used it, let us know.

The Silkolene is ok for ZDDP. I checked it with their technical help line as I also wanted to use it in my Guzzis. I have the amount written down in my notes somewhere.
