The early breathers were just pipes of "a sufficient length". They didn't drop oil on the tyre because they were long. Here's a pic of the set up on my unrestored 175 Sport.

I agree. My Mach 1 came to me with a sufficiently long tube, but I have seen very short tubes on scramblers. I almost went to throw that old yellowed thing away with an eye toward putting a new clear tube on until I realized that it was labeled by the manufacturer... "Pirelli." And I thought they only made tires!

I keep that old breather tube on the bike like a badge of honor now.

The branding was rotated in such a way as to be not visible when mounted to the bike. Maybe on purpose by the Ducati factory? But there are after all a dozen other logos about the bike; Veglia, Silentium, Baruzzo, Super Practic, CEV, Aprilia, to name just some. Maybe the Pirelli name was just hidden by chance.

I love that about these bikes. Post-war Italian manufacturer's names adorning the little bits and pieces of the motorcycles. Nowadays no matter who the parts suppliers are, the parts are delivered bearing the name of the motorcycle manufacturer.

Kev, I'd bet that tube of yours says Pirelli on it somewhere....
