Most Mach 1’s with a frame number have a number similar in format to the M1 engine number: 00XXX or 0XXXX. There are a few that turn up with a different format similar to your frame number: 9XXXX (the 8XXXX number might indicate a very early frame with this type format, which is consistent with the early engine number). The few Mk3’s with frame numbers are typically 94XXX or 95XXX format. *85919* could be Ghost import, a Brooks import, a Canadian model or a European model imported to the USA. As far as frame paint, it appears the entire motorcycle was re-painted at some point. Every Ducati frame I’ve ever stripped original paint from had a light grey primer under the base coat. This frame appears to have no primer. The frame could have been stripped to bare metal and painted black. Except for the crown mounted handlebars and the tach drive (both of which can be believably explained), every other specification indicates a Mach 1. Restored as such, I would regard the result as an authentic Mach 1. Matt

If the motor does not have M1 stamped on it ,it will always be seen as a Mark3, even if it is a genuine Mach1. The speedo on a Mach1 is normally a 150 one, so that would always be a pointer. I would restore it as a 66 Mark3 and be done with it..Mind you I wuold also fit a 27mm SSI for better all round behaviour. You do appear to have most of the right bits though.

Thanks for the info. Now that you mention it, It doesn't have the gray primer on the frame that I usually see. The Engine is stamped M1.

Thanks
