Cadet Restoration Project

Postby miken5678 » Wed Sep 03, 2014 2:49 am

Been quite some time since I have visited the board with a 250 narrow case project. I happened to run across this little beauty from the original owner that purchased it with money from a newspaper route. Think he told me 26 dollars. I thought I found a little treasure that I could easily bring back to life..... or so I thought.

The only bad was a noted kick starter not engaging although I could get it in gear and turn the motor over and have great spark etc.

I manged to get the clutch plate adjusted as it was just free floating on top of the hub.

Score 1 for Mike or so I thought. I am used to seeing a better built clutch pressure plate so it was weird to see how fragile this setup looks and seeing the indentations from the clutch springs right into the metal. I still couldn't get the kick starter to engage. Hmm maybe that layer of sludge should have been my indicator.

I was left with no other choice but to split the cases. Things become so simple when not having to deal with the bevel drive or valve train.

Engine pulled

Engine split. Crappy photos on the camera but the seals on this engine held with no oil leaks and my assumption is that it went through a nice water hole as the red box, as tiny as it is, shows the kick starter rod rusted beyond what I could make of it and in the next photo the retaining ring broken.

At this point I started looking for parts and started realizing just how unique this model is and realize that domiracer went out of business... joy...

you can see what I found in the bottom of the case, the retainer ring. the stud that it rides was so rusted that a best guess determination was made and a ss bolt was turned down and used. I am wondering if the original had some sort of indentation to insure the retaining clip stayed in place or limited movement. I have nothing to go on.

more to come but I have to hit the hay. Hope someone out there might point me in the right direction for a manual pdf format.

Mike,
I have a couple of 2stroke parts books. I will try to get them scanned in the couple of weeks.

Thanks Tony, by chance do they get detailed enough to see the retainer ring bracket that the kickstart mech is part of? Want to make sure I won't run into issues with what I did.

After bead blasting the once nice looking gears and clutch basket showed their true colors. I had no idea and was caught off guard at how thick the oil was and what it was covering up. Needless to say I am looking for a trans set and clutch basket

I think I am ok with the kick start mech but you can see the rest.

I think this was the only 4 speed model but mountaineer parts should work. Others I think might use the same setup are the rare brio. Curious if the cadet 125 4 stroke shares any transmission parts or might have some sort of setup that could be swapped in.. nice to think positive but finding any parts for some of these is turning out to be tricky. I assume road and race might have something but seeing what might be state side first.

Mike, could you take a close up of your hub and lower fork so I can compare to what's on my Sport 48. From what I see in your first picture I think this is what I have. What size are your hubs? 90 or 105?

I'm starting to find who has what stock piled here in Sicily I may be able to help with finding parts. Takes time. NOBODY lists their stuff on the Internet here.

Sorry for the delay. Ha no clue there was a reply and figured there wasn't much interest. Took some photos for you. Also noticed on another bike online the same thing for the speedo on an aprilla headlight. Would be interesting to know the story and why.
